Fußball gliedert sich in vier sich wiederholende Phasen: eigener Ballbesitz, defensive Umschaltphase, Ballbesitz des Gegners und offensive Umschaltphase. Dieses Buch, unter fachlicher Beratung von Ralf Peter (DFB), fokussiert sich auf den eigenen Ballbesitz, da daraus direkte Konsequenzen für das Umschalten des Gegners entstehen.
Zu Beginn werden Grundsätze vermittelt, um Passwege gezielt zu öffnen und zu nutzen. Darauf aufbauend werden konkrete taktische Situationen vorgestellt: Jede Grundsituation aus dem Spielaufbau bietet zwei mögliche Lösungen, die wiederum neue Situationen erzeugen. Dieser logische Aufbau verdeutlicht, wie aus einfachen Prinzipien komplexe Spielmuster entstehen können.
