PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The second part of the series “German Top Level Tactics” is all about the Back Three. The coach and expert on tactics Steven Turek presents at the beginning theoretical principles and deals especially with the following questions:

  • Which impact has the build up of a back three on the rest of the formation?
  • What is the correct build up of a back three?
  • What advantages and disadvantages come along with a back three?

In the second chapter, Steven Turek focuses on concrete situations in competition and describes detailed solutions of the back three. All solutions are described with the definite timing of paths as well as exceptions and specialties.
The last part of the book presents practical exercises. The spectrum reaches over practical drills up to complex team-tactical exercises.  

The exercises in this book focus on building and mastering play from a back-three formation. They begin with foundational drills on positioning, coordination, and dribbling out of the back, including variations for the #6 and wide defenders against one or two strikers.

Training progresses to game-like passing, vertical passing, keep-away, and free passing with central zones, then moves into small-sided numerical superiority games such as 6v3, 4v2, and 3(+1)v2(+1), emphasizing movement, ball circulation, and creating space. Larger-sided formats, including 6v6, 8v8, 8v9, and 10v10 across multiple zones, integrate dribbling, vertical attacks, and tactical build-up, giving players practical experience in transitioning from defense to organized attack while maintaining structure in the back three.

Steven Turek, born in Peine in 1990, lives for football. He began his coaching career at VfB Peine at the age of 18, obtained his UEFA A license early on and developed into one of the most committed youth coaches in Germany. After stints in Braunschweig and seven years at Hannover 96's youth training center - most recently as U17 head coach - Turek was looking for new challenges in 2023. Since August 2024, he has been in charge of the U19 academy at MLS club Atlanta United.
